To explain the powers better I will use my favorite character, Halloween (the pumpkin), as an example: The powers are activated by pushing up and then the fun begins. Like I said previously, you have four powers, meaning four levels. Each orb gives you one level toward your powers. Once you have one placed, you need to complete that line so you can obtain the orb. So if you see an orb-lodged piece it is usually a frantic rush to be able to grab the piece. However to use the powers you have to obtain power orbs that are mixed into the normal pieces.Īnother twist in Tetris Battle Gaiden is that the piece pool is shared. For some time, I was a big puzzle game fan and thought I had played almost every variation of the classic (and yes most of them are the same). On the surface, Tetris Battle Gaiden appears to be a shallow game with a tacked on theme that would leave me longing to play the original. With a quick look it would appear just like any other Tetris clone. In this case, the undiscovered gem is Tetris Battle Gaiden. It is always nice when you have a craving to play a classic games like Tetris, but end up discovering a relatively unknown spinoff that is just as amazing as the original. I admit that I had never heard of this game, so I want to thank him for pointing this gem out. Tetris 99 has several themes, several of which based upon other Nintendo properties. The better placement results in more experience to raise the player's badge level. The player can only send their garbage blocks to one player and this is determined by using the right to select either Random, Badges (level), Killshots (those close to losing) or Counter (someone who is targeting the player). The other players' games can be seen beside the game space with a special mark if they were knocked out by the player. The game is played battle royale-style with the players being ranked at the end by where they placed. When receiving garbage blocks, some can be prevented by performing their own combos. These combos generate garbage blocks for an opposing player. The player tries to stack up tetriminos to create combos. The game is a much like multiplayer Tetris in the previous entries of the series.
